Ok, his music does not suck, he is a resourceful singer who sings in his own voice and tell stories that no on else dare, he sangs about paying the rent, and smoking, being unemployed, and Facebook kids. The Egyptian answer to modern day cavemen is this hairy singer. He also had unkind words about women calling them crazy. Now he is after the corruption in Egypt. He refused to criticize Mubarak and had nothing nice to say about the Tahrir boys and girls.
He was rejected by many mainstream music industry types, but he does not care, he sold more records than anyone one else and generated more headlines than anyone else. While his choice of music style is not the folksy type (Sha'abi, the lyrics and words he uses are for sure.
The random singer who came from nowhere to bewitched the music industry with his fresh approach to songs did a lot to stimulate the music market. His music is the kind that someone with a PhD listens to for laughs, and the guy who sells produces takes to be words of wisdom. so his fan base is essentially everyone and anyone who listens to Arabic music. I am sure his proactive lyrics have brought back those Arabs who do not usually listen to Arabic music. The lyrics are so vague that the lyricists had to come out and explain whom is meant by those lyrics that can be interpreted to be deeming of the Tahrir Square protesters.
In 2001, an Egyptian comedian Mohammad Saad came and made Al Lemby, a new style of funny and everyone loved the jokes. In 2010, Abu El Leef did the same for Arabic music listeners...my question will Abu El Leef become a one hit wonder?
